John Thompson

A Few Words About John

John Thompson was elected Councillor for the Town of Goderich in 2022 and joined the Source Protection Committee in February 2023.

John’s strong and lifelong interest in ecological concerns began when he read Edward Hyams’s book, Soil and Civilization, and E. F. Schumacher’s Small is Beautiful, back in the 1970s. Since then, his interest has been expressed through education – he earned a Master in Environmental Studies degree from York University in 1992 – and through volunteer work with a variety of environmental organizations.

John has had a long and varied career as a researcher and reporter. He was a journalist, a library planner, a computer consultant, and a rural economic development researcher. In addition to his MES degree, John also has a PhD in Human Development and Applied Psychology from the University of Toronto.

He lives in Goderich with his wife Beth.
