Welcome to new Source Protection Technician

I would like to welcome the new Source Protection Technician for the Ausable Bayfield Maitland Valley Source Protection Region.

His name is Derek Matheson. Derek will be working primarily out of the Maitland Valley Source Protection Authority office in Wroxeter.

Derek should be an extremely strong asset to the Drinking Water Source Protection and Drinking Water Stewardship Program team.

Derek was one of only five people accepted for the Conservation Biology Specialization in the fourth year of his Biology and Environmental Resource Science program at Trent University.

He has experience in a project to conserve and restore a belt of limestone plains through Kawartha Heritage Conservancy and volunteered with a project to rehabilitate and enhance Kennisis Lake through public engagement and providing alternative sewage treatment options to cottagers. He has also volunteered in a wetland conservation outreach program.

Derek grew up on a beef farm and should be an excellent ambassador when dealing directly with landowners. His combination of strong scientific and technical grounding combined with his excellent interpersonal skills, knowledge of beneficial management practices and practical septic/well/land issues and demonstrated computer and written communication abilities make his acceptance very exciting.

Derek's main duties will be carrying on the communications role Chris was doing but he will also be doing some of the work that Dallas had been doing on the stewardship program.

Welcome aboard, Derek!

Tim
